About Cherokee

Cherokee is a town of about 970 people (2020 Census) on U.S. Highway 72, a few miles east of the Mississippi state line. It’s about 14 miles east of Iuka and about 17 miles west of Tuscumbia, the Colbert County seat, and it’s part of the Florence-Muscle Shoals metro area that locals call “the Shoals.” The town began as a stop on the Memphis & Charleston Railroad and was incorporated in 1871, making it one of the older towns in Colbert County.

Jobs are nearby. In March 2026, Hadrian opened a submarine-components factory in the former railcar plant at the Barton Riverfront Industrial Park, with up to 1,000 manufacturing jobs planned as it ramps up.
